What software do architecture firms need in 2026?
An architecture practice runs on four layers that must connect: the design layer (BIM and CAD — Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks), a common data environment (CDE) where models and drawings are shared and version-controlled, a visualisation layer for rendering and client presentation, and a business layer covering practice management, time and fee tracking, and client communication. The 2026 shift is that cloud collaboration now ties these together: over 60% of BIM users work through cloud coordination tools for real-time project work (Technavio, 2025).
The market underneath this is large and growing. The global AEC software market is valued at about USD 14.0 billion in 2026 and forecast to reach USD 28.7 billion by 2035 (9.5% CAGR), with Europe growing at roughly 10.2% a year (Business Research Insights, 2026). For a practice, that means the tooling is maturing fast — and standing still is a competitive risk.

Is BIM mandatory in Europe?
There is no single EU-wide mandate — but there is a growing patchwork of national ones, and they are converging. The EU Public Procurement Directive 2014/24/EU explicitly lets member states require digital modelling tools for public works. In its own words, the directive states that member states “may require the use of specific electronic tools, such as building information electronic modelling tools or similar” (Directive 2014/24/EU, EUR-Lex).

Many countries have taken up that option. Italy made BIM mandatory for public works above EUR 1 million from 1 January 2025, and the UK, Germany, France and the Nordics lead on public-project BIM requirements (ITeC, 2025). The practical consequence for a practice bidding across borders is simple: your BIM capability has to meet the strictest market you work in, not the most lenient.
How widely is BIM actually adopted?
Widely, and increasingly non-negotiable. Over 70% of European AEC firms have implemented BIM in their workflows, with a further ~25% adoption increase expected around 2026; in the Nordics, penetration exceeds 80% among large firms (Virtue Market Research, 2026). Adoption is driven by measurable returns: studies indicate BIM can reduce project costs by up to 20% and improve efficiency by around 30%.
This mirrors a broader European spending surge on software and cloud. Gartner expects Western European software spending near $335bn in 2026 (+15.6%), with public-cloud spending up around 24%.

Do architects need a client portal?
Increasingly, yes — and this is where most practices have the biggest, cheapest win. A client and contractor portal gives everyone a single, secure place to view current drawings, approve stages, exchange documents and sign off, replacing scattered email threads and unwieldy file transfers. It also does real compliance work: it keeps personal and project data in one controlled, auditable system rather than in inboxes, which is exactly what GDPR expects, and it can carry eIDAS-compliant e-signatures for approvals and appointment contracts.
Because a portal touches client data and, potentially, AI features (automated status updates, generated summaries), the same European rules apply as for any modern product: GDPR from the first real user, and the EU AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations from 2 August 2026 if you add a chatbot or generated content. Buy or build?
For design tools, buy. BIM and CAD are mature, deeply supported products, and no practice should commission its own modelling engine. Custom development earns its keep in the business and client layer: a branded client/contractor portal, a project dashboard that fits how your studio actually works, or an integration layer that connects BIM, document storage and accounting so nobody re-keys data between systems.
If you build, scope it tightly. A practical buying checklist
- BIM level: Does your capability meet the strictest public-procurement requirement in the markets you bid in?
- Common data environment: Is there one source of truth for models and drawings, with version control and audit trails?
- Interoperability: Do your tools exchange open formats (IFC/BCF) so you are not locked to one vendor?
- Client portal: Can clients and contractors view, approve and sign off in one secure, GDPR-friendly place?
- e-Signature & AI transparency: eIDAS-compliant signing, and Article 50 disclosure if any AI feature is client-facing.
- Integration cost: Total cost of connecting design, documents and accounting — over three years, not month one.
