When programmatic SEO backfires

The signal to programmatic publishers is unmistakable: scale without substance is now a fast route to a penalty, not a shortcut to traffic.
The four failure signs
- Near-duplicate templates: pages that are identical except for a swapped keyword. If a reader would notice nothing changed but the city name, neither will Google.
- No original data or insight per page: if the page has nothing a competitor could not paste from a generic source, it adds nothing to the index.
- Keywords no one meaningfully searches: generating pages for demand that does not exist creates orphaned, thin pages that dilute the whole site.
- Filler that pads word count: boilerplate intros and repetitive sections written to hit a length target rather than to answer the question.
How to do it safely
The safeguard is a publish-gate of substance: no page ships unless it clears a minimum bar of original insight, data or examples. Validate real demand before generating, de-template so every page carries a unique angle and unique data, and control velocity — especially on a young domain, where a sudden spike in publishing is exactly the pattern Google’s scaled-content systems watch. Add real bylines and real citations, and disclose AI assistance where a reader would reasonably ask how the page was made. If the honest answer to “why does this page exist?” is “to catch search traffic,” it should not be published.
